Nyack Hospital, a 375-bed, community acute care medical and surgical hospital in Rockland County, New York, has selected Constellation to design and implement energy and water conservation measures.
The hospital said it will invest more than $1m in an energy and water conservation project, designed to save an estimated $270,000 per year in utility costs and reduce electricity use by more one million kWh annually.
Under terms of a two-year electricity supply contract with Constellation, the upgrades require no upfront capital from the hospital.
The cost of efficiency measures is included in the price per kWh over the term of the electricity supply agreement.
However, in most cases, customers realise immediate savings on energy costs as a result of reduced energy use.
Conservation measures installed at Nyack Hospital include: energy efficient LED lighting and lighting controls; low-flow toilets and faucets; and steam plant upgrades.
H20 Applied Technologies will install the water and steam plant upgrades, while ESCO will install the lighting upgrades. Work is scheduled for completion during first quarter 2014.
The hospital anticipates conserving an estimated 12.4 million gallons of water and avoiding the creation of 1,616,357 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.
Nyack Hospital vice president and chief information officer John Volanto said environmental stewardship is one of the ways in which the hospital carries out its mission and responsibility to care for the community.
"The impact of the environment on health and disease is evidenced by healthcare providers on a daily basis," Volanto added.
"We are proud of the results achieved by our efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle and look forward to the same success with this energy and water conservation project."
The Efficiency Made Easy programme enables Constellation customers to fund energy conservation measures, such as energy efficient lighting, as part of their electricity supply bill.
Constellation senior vice president, energy management programmes Gary Fromer said energy efficiency is an essential part of any successful energy management strategy.
"Competition for capital funds is a common hurdle for customers in making necessary upgrades," Fromer added.
"Combining energy supply purchases with efficiency measures can make conservation projects financially feasible for customers, allowing them to reduce costs and operate in a more environmentally responsible way."
Nyack Hospital is a member of the New York-Presbyterian Healthcare System, an affiliate of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and has partnered with Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine providing clinical rotations to third-year medical students.
