Partners HealthCare signed an agreement to acquire two hospitals of Hallmark Health, to provide high-quality, coordinated and cost-effective healthcare.

If the deal is approved, there would be changes at four hospitals on the North Shore.

Hallmark Health System (HHS) includes Lawrence Memorial Hospital (LMH) of Medford and Melrose-Wakefield Hospital (MWH).

Partners HealthCare president and CEO Dr Gary L Gottlieb said this partnership with Hallmark Health will bring a more thoughtful approach to healthcare in the entire region.

"Hallmark Health System (HHS) includes Lawrence Memorial Hospital (LMH) of Medford and Melrose-Wakefield Hospital (MWH)."

"By investing in primary care and doing a better job of coordinating that care, we can keep patients healthier and out of the hospital – ultimately reducing costs in our healthcare system," Dr Gottlieb added.

MWH will remain a full service acute care hospital, adding 25 primary care physicians.

Partners would renovate and expand primary care services in medical, surgical and maternity services, as well as potentially add inpatient treatment areas for psychiatric patients with acute medical problems.

LMH would still offer urgent medical needs, but would shift to short-term stay inpatient and ambulatory facility operated by MGH.

As part of the long-term plan MGH, in partnership with Hallmark Health, will likely invest in an outpatient cancer centre in the Stoneham area, and help increase capacity in medical oncology and radiation oncology for accommodating more patients in a community-based centre.

Considerable investments will also be made in state of the art information technology, to help improve community-based coordinated care at reduced costs.

Major renovations to this campus are being planned to transform the hospital into a modern, state-of-the-art facility.

The proposal is subject to approval by state and federal agencies, including the US Department of Justice, which will likely take at least several months.

Partners HealthCare is an integrated health system founded by Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.

In addition to its two academic medical centres, the Partners system includes community and specialty hospitals, a managed care organisation, community health centres, a physician network, home health and long-term care services and other health-related entities.

Hallmark Health System is a charitable provider of vital health services to Boston’s northern communities.
