Three hospitals in Kentucky, US, are to merge to form a statewide health services organisation, to improve the quality of care in the region.

Catholic Health Initiatives, the University of Louisville Health Care Hospital and Jewish Hospital have agreed to sign a letter of intent to this effect.

The new entity with combined revenues of more than $2bn will employ 3,000 doctors across the state.

The merger involves $300m investment by Catholic Health Initiatives, expansion of an academic medical centre in Louisville and a statewide extension of the research and teaching programmes of the University of Louisville.
