The US handheld ultrasound imaging market is forecast to surpass $1.2bn by 2016, according to a report by iData Research.

Market growth is expected to be driven by the increased adoption of the devices and the use of ultrasound in emergency medicine.

iData CEO Dr Kamran Zamanian said the use of handheld systems will increase as the systems improve the ability to diagnose and treat a larger number of patients.

“In addition, emergency medicine is driving sales of handheld systems since portability is a key consideration in this segment,” Zamanian said.

The breast ultrasound market is also expected to double by 2016, the report added.
