A safety-enhanced disposal device could avert more than 19,000 accidental needlestick and sharps injuries to healthcare workers a year, according to a study published in the American Journal of Infection Control.

The results showed that the use of Daniels’ Sharpsmart disposal device reduced the number of container-associated injuries by 81% in a group of 14 hospitals over a period of one year.

In addition, the number of sharp injuries in those hospitals were four times fewer compared to another group of 14 hospitals that used a different sharps disposal device.

Sharpsmart’s safety features including a larger opening, a larger gap between the opening and the collection area, a gravity-activated deposit tray, one-hand-enabled disposal, overfill protection and safe final-closure activation.
