The use of CT in US hospital emergency departments is on the rise, according to a study published in Radiology.

Researchers evaluated data collected by the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey between 1995 and 2007 to analyse the trends associated with CT use.

They found that number of emergency department visits that involved a CT exam increased from 2.7 million in 1995 to 16.5 million in 2007, nearly a six-fold increase.

The percentage of visits that involved a CT exam increased from 2.8% in 1995 to 13.9% in 2007.

T he study also noted that if this trend continues, almost 20% of all the emergency department visits in 2011 will involve a CT exam.
