The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Ghana, has broken ground on a new blood and sickle cell centre.

The centre will include a sickle cell clinic, a blood transfusion unit and a training centre, and provide emergency services in the north of the country.

It will also act as the centre of excellence in the training in the West Africa sub-region.

The project, financed by a grant from the Brazilian Government, is estimated to cost $13.66m.
