The merger agreement between the Morristown-based Atlantic Health and the Sussex County Newton Memorial Hospital New Jersey, both in the US, has officially been approved.

With the merger, Newton Memorial will be integrated into the Morristown hospital system and with patients benefitting from the healthcare services provided by Overlook Hospital and Morristown Memorial Hospital.

The merger is expected to lower administrative and operational healthcare costs, as the hospitals will share health information technology and electronic medical records.

Additional benefits to the patients include access to paediatric and speciality care, clinical trials, advanced protocols for emergent care and a strengthened primary care network.

With the merger, the three hospitals will have a combined total of 1,308 licenced beds and more than 2,750 affiliated physicians providing an array of healthcare services to the residents of Northern and Central New Jersey.

Atlantic Health is a not-for-profit health care system, currently owning and operating Overlook Hospital and Morristown Memorial Hospital, while Newton Memorial is a community-based medical facility.
