Canada has started construction work on the first building project on the site of the new BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The 2,346m² clinical support building will house staff moving from offices in the 70-year-old Shaughnessy building, part of which will be demolished in 2013 to make way for the new hospital.

The construction of the new hospital will be completed in three phases, and is estimated to cost about C$683m ($707.9m).

The first phase will include the construction of a free-standing child daycare centre, an expansion of BC Women’s Hospital, additional space for the University of British Columbia medical school and three new neonatal intensive care unit beds.

The second and third phase will include the building of the new BC Children’s Hospital as well as further renovation and the expansion of BC Women’s Hospital.
