UNC Hospitals has broken ground on a hospital campus in North Carolina, US.

The $200m project will be completed in two phases, which are set for completion in 2013 and 2015 respectively.

The scope of work for the first phase includes building an outpatient clinic with urgent care, imaging and oncology services .

The second phase will involve creating 50 acute-care beds, an 18-bed intensive care unit, six operating rooms, two procedure rooms and an emergency department.

UNC Health Care CEO William Roper told Chapel Hill News that the UNC Hospitals’ main campus is overcrowded, with 80% to 90% of its beds filled most days.

It is hoped that the new campus, located in Hillsborough’s Waterstone development, will relieve this overcrowding.
