The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Specialists On Call (SOC) are collaborating to increase the availability of acute neurology services and access to expert neurologists throughout Florida, US, and several other states, using teleneurology technology.

Miller School professor and chair of neurology Ralph Sacco said stroke is the fourth-leading cause of death in Florida, a figure that highlights the urgent need to increase better access to acute stroke care.

Teleneurology uses modern telecommunications to advance the delivery of neurology services and medical consultation even when the doctor and the patient are in different places, or even in different time zones.

SOC has been providing teleneurology services throughout the US with immediate and 24/7 access to highly trained specialty physicians.

In comparison with other specialties such as radiology, psychiatry and dermatology, neurology has been slow to adopt telemedicine.
