The Australian Government will fund a $10m ‘Walk-in-Centre’ at The Canberra Hospital, to help take pressure off its busy emergency department.
The nurse-led Walk-in Centre will begin construction in July 2009 and be operational in June 2010.
Once operational, more minor cases will be treated at the Walk-in Centre, enabling the emergency department to concentrate on more serious cases.
The new clinic will be operational 16 hours per day throughout the week. It is estimated to provide up to 30,000 services annually.
Currently, the hospital’s emergency department sees approximately 53,000 patients each year.
