A new telemedicine eCare project that allows real time information sharing of medical experts between US hospitals has started in Maryland to improve emergency patient care.

Intensive-care staff at Calvert Memorial Hospital in Prince Frederick can access Christiana Care’s critical-medicine specialists through the remote monitoring centre based at Christiana Care Health System in Delaware.

The eICU technology from VISICU, a unit of Philips Healthcare, enables experts at Christiana Care to keep track of patients in real-time through voice, video and data connectivity.

CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield has awarded $3m to start the project.
