A new technology that can mirror the movements of a beating heart and allow surgeons to operate through robots is being developed, aiming to reduce the risks involved in heart bypass surgery.
The technology makes the heart appear still by synchronising the movement of the heart with the surgeon’s eye as it continually refocuses on the organ, The Times reports.
The innovative surgery being developed by the UK Health Minister and keyhole surgery pioneer Lord Darzi of Denham can reduce the trauma patients undergo when they have major heart surgery.
Professor Darzi and Imperial College computer scientist Guang-Zhong Yang have developed algorithms that use cameras to track how a surgeon’s eyes refocus on fixation points as the heart beats.
The UK Department of Health has allocated £220m to support unconventional NHS work that might transform clinical care.
