Postmenopausal early-stage breast cancer in women could be cost-effectively treated by external beam partial breast irradiation (EB-PBI), according to The International Journal of Radiation Oncology *Biology *Physics study.

The study is based on recurrence risks and costs comparing EB-PBI with whole breast radiotherapy (WBRT) and brachytherapy partial breast irradiation (brachy-PBI).

EB-PBI is significantly more cost effective than WBRT which is more economical than brachy-PBI, said the report.

A senior author of the study and radiation oncologist at Dana-Farber said given this high prevalence, resource-conscious healthcare systems may want to consider cost effectiveness when deciding on appropriate adjuvant therapies for patients with early-stage breast cancer.
