California has launched its largest-ever electronic prescribing initiative, bringing together a number of healthcare providers across the US state.

The pilot programme will work with physicians to determine the best way to deploy e-prescribing to enhance patient care and avoid prescription errors by physicians.

The e-Prescribing technology will enable physicians to electronically submit a prescription from their place of work directly to the pharmacy chosen by the patient.

California Public Employees’ Retirement System has joined with Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California, and Medco Health Solutions to launch the scheme.

The programme will track results of identified preventable adverse drug events and the results will be reported in 2010.
