The Australian Government has invested $8.1m in operating theatres and surgical equipment in Adelaide as part of the government’s elective surgery plan aimed at reducing waiting times.

The Flinders Medical Centre at Bedford Park received $458,000 to upgrade an operating theatre and an additional $660,000 to improve ear, nose and throat surgery, plastic surgery and general surgery services.

The latest funding is part of the second-stage investment worth $150m to improve hospital capacity and elective surgery systems, in order to speed up surgery in the future.

The third and final stage of the elective surgery plan will begin later in 2009 with $300m across Australian states and territories to be delivered between 2009 and 2011.
