Australia is planning to implement a nationwide e-health system for better management of medical records and to reduce avoidable medical errors such as mismatching of patient information.

The Australian Health Ministers’ Conference has announced that national consultations will be carried out to establish a legislative framework and ensure the use of healthcare identity numbers.

Individual healthcare identifiers will be given to public and private healthcare organisations, providers and healthcare consumers for patient identification.

Currently, there is no reliable procedure for accurately identifying the patient, physicians or the organisation managing the care.
