The University of California San Diego (UCSD) Medical Center will deploy real-time speech recognition technology to help physicians document electronic health records.

Nuance Communications’ Dragon Medical solution enables doctors to document patient encounters via voice recognition technology, without needing to depend on medical transcription, typing or mouse navigation, the company said.

UCSD Medical Center CIO Ed Babakanian said that speech recognition technology has helped physicians get information online faster.

“At UCSD Medical Center, speech recognition has become an important component of our EHR implementation, allowing doctors to accurately capture patient encounter information,” said Babakanian.
