The Australian Government has granted nearly A$1m for the establishment of a dialysis unit at the new A$145m Auburn Hospital in New South Wales.
Auburn’s six-chair satellite dialysis service will serve the growing number of dialysis patients in western Sydney by treating around 24 renal patients every week, the government said.
A total of A$7.7m has been allocated for the expansion of renal services in the 2009–10 state budget.
Services include additional renal dialysis chairs, intensive therapy capacity, home dialysis support and prevention and education programmes.
One in seven Australians over the age of 25 suffers from chronic kidney disease, accounting for the highest number of visits to public hospitals each year, the government said.
