Only 56% of eligible coronary artery disease (CAD) patients discharged from US hospitals are referred to cardiac rehabilitation despite evidence that it is beneficial, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Researchers analysed data from the American Heart Association’s ‘Get With The Guidelines’ programme, which included 72,817 heart patients from 156 US hospitals.

Researchers said that increased physician awareness about cardiac rehabilitation benefits and initiatives to address barriers to referral were important for quality care of CAD patients.
