City Hospital in the US state of West Virginia has begun its $28m expansion project.

The hospital, which is part of the West Virginia University Hospitals-East network, will be equipped with a new cardiac catheterisation laboratory, intensive care/coronary care unit (IC/CCU) and emergency department, journal-news.net reports.

The 11,840ft² catheterisation lab and the emergency department are expected to be operational by 2010.

The catheterisation lab will be able to house two sets of lab equipment and offer interventional cardiac catheterisation services, officials said.

The 120,000ft² IC/CCU, scheduled to be completed by November 2010, will house 20 beds, four of which will be for coronary care, the news service said.

The emergency department is to be expanded by 17,000ft², will house 40 rooms and serve around 60,000–65,000 patients a year, hospital officials said.
