The Australian Government has announced funds of A$7.2m to install a new cutting-edge positron emission tomography (PET) scanner in Tasmania, which will be the first for the state.

The PET scanner, to be installed at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH), will be used for diagnostics and for clinical research.

The funding will allow RHH to operate a tertiary oncology unit with daily access to a PET-CT scanning service, the government said.
