Scotland will launch a nationwide Methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) superbug screening programme to reduce the spread of hospital infections.

All patients awaiting operations at Paisley’s Royal Alexandra Hospital will be tested for MRSA, as the initiative’s first stage to screen every patient in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, reports.

The £1.3m scheme builds on other initiatives by the NHS Trust to minimise healthcare-associated infections, which decreased MRSA rates by 9% year-on-year since 2005/06, the news agency reports.
