Excavation work at the Swedish Medical Center in the US state of Washington has begun and an official groundbreaking is expected on 12 October 2009.

A new medical office building and an outpatient care centre will be constructed on the hospital campus by 2011 as part of the first phase of the hospital’s expansion, sammamishreview.com reports.

In the second phase, 80 hospital beds will be added by the first quarter of 2012, which will be later expanded to 175 beds, sammamishreview.com said.

The new campus will provide inpatient and outpatient services including oncology, cardiac care, obstetrics, paediatrics and neurosciences and intensive care.
