Plans have been proposed for a new £90m cancer research centre to be included in the new Royal Liverpool Hospital in the UK.

The centre will offer world-class research facilities in fields such as cancer, infectious diseases and digestive diseases such as Crohn’s disease.

If the plans go ahead, the centre will be built on land adjacent to the University of Liverpool’s biosciences building and will accommodate more than 600 researchers.

The university and the government’s Higher Education Funding Council for England will fund the project.

An application has been sent to city planners by the university with a view to opening the facility by 2011.
