The US Senate Finance Committee has started assessing the sweeping changes President Barack Obama is proposing for the country’s healthcare system.

In a series of television interviews in the past week Obama has defended his healthcare policy and said he has been “humbled” by the struggle to win support, guardian.co.uk reports.

Obama’s Baucus plan on healthcare reform will cost $900bn and calls for a reform in the way the US insurance sector covers US citizens.

On 10 September, Obama was forced to defend his policy to the US congress where he said it was the only developed country that led millions of its people to endure the hardship of going without healthcare, the BBC reports.

Opposing Republicans said on 23 September that a feud over healthcare put the decision of whether to send more troops to Afghanistan in jeopardy.
