The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced grants of $27.8m to health centres to expand the use of health information technology (HIT).
The funds will be provided to health centre-controlled networks and large multi-site health centres to implement electronic health records and other HIT innovations.

Increased use of HIT can improve healthcare quality, prevent medical errors and enhance the efficiency of care provision, government officials said.
The grants are part of the $2bn allotted to HHS under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to expand healthcare services to low-income and uninsured individuals through its health centre programme.
