The UK Government is planning to scrap hospital car parking fees for inpatients in England over the next three years to encourage more visitors and boost patient care.

The move is expected to cost the government £140m each year, The Guardian reports.

Health secretary Andy Burnham who announced the plans said that extra money could be raised from back-office costs and by cutting bureaucracy.

Friends and relatives of inpatients will be given parking permits for the duration of the hospital stay, the government said.
