Hospitals in Ireland have reported nearly 300,000 incidents involving mistakes or near-misses in the last five-and-a-half years, resulting in €133m of compensation payouts to patients.
Of the overall number, 3,522 incidents from 2003 had gone on to result in compensation claims, the State Claims Agency said.
One in three of the total number of incidents was a result of a slip or fall rather than medical errors, independent.ie reports.
After these incidents, those resulting from violence and aggression were the next most common, followed by medication errors, treatment incidents and mistakes involving records and documentation, the news agency reports.
