The £61m ($97.5m) Bristol Heart Institute (BHI) Medical Centre was officially opened in the UK on 12 October 2009.
The state-of-the-art centre, funded by the Department of Health, is part of University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust’s collaboration with the University of Bristol.
The hospital integrates cardiology and cardiac surgery as well as cardiac imaging and research. It also offers diagnostic and interventional treatments for heart conditions, including primary angioplasty.
The centre features three catheter laboratories and a hybrid theatre, three inpatient wards for cardiac patients, a cardiac intensive care unit (CICU), a coronary care unit and an outpatients department.
The centre will perform around 1,700 heart operations, 4,000 cardiology procedures and treat around 15,000 outpatients per year, and is linked to the Bristol Royal Infirmary through theatres and the CICU.
