The $467m Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven Hospital in the US has started operations.

Smilow is the first cancer treatment facility in New England to house inpatient and outpatient care and consists of a special centre for gynaecological cancer and breast cancer.

The 14-storey hospital will house outpatient treatment rooms, operating rooms, diagnostic imaging services and 112 inpatient beds when it opens fully in April 2010.

The 497,000ft² hospital will also include a healing garden, a boutique, infusion suites and therapeutic radiology.
