The US Department of Health & Human Services has awarded $17m to fund projects that fight expensive and dangerous healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) such as MRSA.
The grants include $8m towards the national expansion of the Keystone Project, which has reduced central-line bloodstream infections in more than 100 Michigan intensive care units within 18 months.
The remaining $9m will be used for projects aimed at reducing MRSA and other types of HAIs such as Clostridium difficile through a regional hospital collaborative, HHS said.
Other projects include reducing the overuse of antibiotics by clinicians in ambulatory and long-term care settings, evaluating ways to eliminate MRSA in intensive care units and improving measuring the risk of infections after surgery.
