Canadians seeking surgical or other therapeutic treatment have to wait 16.1 weeks, nearly the same delay experienced in 2000–01, according to a new report.
The Fraser Institute’s report on hospital waiting times found that despite significant increases in healthcare spending by the government, Canadians were waiting 113 days on average for their treatment.
The surgical waiting times were 73% longer than the 1993 figures with the longest waits between a GP referral and orthopaedic surgery, neurosurgery and plastic surgery, the report said.
Waiting times in 2009, however, showed an improvement compared to 2008 figures, mainly due to a decrease in times between consultation with a specialist and receiving treatment, researchers said.
