Oman has launched its first mobile mammography unit (MMU), which aims to provide women with easy access to screening facilities for the early detection of breast cancer.

The $1m (RO388,000) MMU, unveiled by the National Association for Cancer Awareness (NACA), is equipped with a digital mammography machine and a stabilising system, according to Times of Oman.

The MMU, consisting of an all-female staff of radiological technologists that are highly trained in mammography imaging services, is an alternative to hospital-based radiological facilities.

Mammography of patients will be conducted free of charge and the images will be transferred to NACA to be read by a specialised radiologist.
