A £2m surgical robot has been unveiled to operate on cancer patients at the Oxford Cancer Centre, Oxfordshire, UK.
The instrument called the da Vinci robot has a set of robotic arms, which are used by doctors to perform keyhole surgery on prostrate and renal cancer patients, while sitting at a distance from them, according to The Press Association.
The robotic device, which has dual controls so experienced surgeons can train others in its use, could be expanded to operate on bladder and colorectal cancer patients in the future.
University of Oxford, Nuffield College professor of surgery Freddie Hamdy said the new surgical instrument also improves recovery time, so that patients can go home sooner after the surgery.
“These robotic systems are revolutionising the way surgery is carried out, offering astonishing precision,” Hamdy said.
