St Francis Private Hospital in Ireland has adopted a new policy to introduce copper-made door handles to reduce the spread of infections.

Research trials at Selly Oak Hospital, Birmingham, found that door handles, toilet seats and taps with copper surfaces help to reduce microbial contamination by 90–100%.

The hospital’s nursing home, St Clair’s in Mullingar, County Westmeath, has also introduced door handles with a copper surface.
