A new way of cleaning medical equipment using microwaves has been developed by researchers at Glyndwr University in Wrexham, UK.

Attaching a vacuum vessel to a microwave oven will generate atomic oxygen and ozone gases that kill harmful bacteria in five minutes or less.

The new plasma-based approach provides a chemical-free solution to killing harmful bacteria on medical tools used in GP, dentist and veterinary surgeries.

The system relies on the intense electric fields generated inside a microwave running at low power and as the microwave turns, the chamber gives off a pink glow.
