Physician-owned hospitals in the US, the patients they treat and the communities they serve will suffer destructive consequences from passage of the healthcare reform bill, according to the executive director of Physician Hospitals of America (PHA).

According to executive director Molly Sandvig, the legislation destroys over 60 hospitals that are under development, and will stop the growth of many of the best hospitals in the country.

“In total, over 25,000 jobs are at risk in 37 states. Billions of dollars already invested in hospitals stand to be lost. Rural and inner city hospitals being rescued and kept open by physician investment will now close,” Sandvig said.

“Patients across the country should be outraged that the government has chosen to stop the growth of many of the best hospitals in the in the country.”

“We need high-quality, efficient, patient-centred care, not more of the same high-cost, inefficient, bureaucratic-minded care. The impact of the healthcare reform bill on physician-owned hospitals is truly illogical and unfortunate.”

The PHA, which represents more than 220 hospitals, is working with Senate and House supporters to pursue all options available to challenge the legislation.
