Eight healthcare trusts in Lancashire, UK, have chosen Virgin Media Business’s new high-speed network to allow medical staff to collaborate more effectively.

According to plans for the £9m project, a bespoke service desk will provide a single point of contact for the county’s healthcare community to increase efficiency, optimise online security and improve patient care.

The project will include the delivery of wireless, local area network (LAN), voice, remote access service and mobile services.

Virgin will partner with infrastructure and security firm Imerja for the initial stage of the project, including the development and management of the bespoke service desk.

The network will connect 11 hospital sites, 85 health centres, clinics and surgeries, 33 mental health and social care departments, three prisons and 37 other NHS sites across the eight trusts.

The trusts include Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust, NHS Blackburn with Darwen, NHS East Lancashire, East Lancashire Hospitals Trust, NHS Central Lancashire, NHS North Lancashire and Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Trust.

Future phases of the network project include videoconferencing, fixed and wireless LAN services and business continuity initiatives.
