Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) activists are appealing to the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the US Surgeon General, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and Ministers of Health to declare MRSA an ongoing epidemic and pandemic.
The Chicago-based MRSA Survivors Network is also calling for immediate action to obtain funds to raise awareness and pay for healthcare facilities to launch detection and isolation (ADI) programmes.
More Americans die every year from invasive MRSA infections compared with HIV / AIDS, HIN1 influenza and Parkinson’s disease, according to the group.
MRSA Survivors Network is planning for a World MRSA Day event on 1 October this year, with the theme “The MRSA Epidemic – A Call to Action”.
Awareness programmes are planned across Europe and the US in October.
