Blue Medical has started the PIONEER trial to evaluate a new stent-drug combination in improving the quality of life of patients with cardiovascular disease.

The trial, part of Blue Medical’s clinical programme, is testing the delivery of a coronary stent placed on a drug-eluting balloon.

The drug-eluting balloon delivers drugs during stent placement only and reduces the period that follow-up medication is needed, according to PIONEER researchers.

When the stent is placed, a predetermined dose of Paclitaxel is delivered to the vessel wall to support the vessel in adapting to the stent and reducing adverse effects in the first days after implantation.

The trial has enrolled its first patient in the Catharina Hospital Eindhoven and will enrol patients in five additional medical centres in the Netherlands.
