Melbourne’s Epworth Hospital in Australia has been affected by a hospital bug that has killed thousands of people worldwide.

While the normal strain Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is common for patients in hospitals and nursing homes, the hypervirulent strain of CDI is more severe and increases the chance of relapse.

Of the three patients in the hospital who were found to have the infection, two have recovered and been discharged, officials said.

The highly infectious and potentially deadly strain of the bug has killed thousands of people in the UK, North America and Europe in the last decade, but this is the first time it is has been found in Australia.

The hospital has evaluated its infection control procedures to control the spread of the bug, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.
