Hospital wards in the UK may be closed following the release of more detailed reports on deadly hospital bugs such as MRSA and C difficile, Health Secretary Andrew Lansley has cautioned.

Instead of taking only rates of infection for an entire trust of up to three hospitals, the government is now asking for details of infections by both bacteria for each ward and each week.

The policy will raise NHS standards, according to Lansley.

Health union Unison has criticised the government’s plan, saying the true solution to hospital infection is targeted cleaning.

“It’s important to stop infections but rates are falling. Instead of frightening people the government should deal with the problem properly,” a Unison spokesperson told the Daily Mirror.
