Duplex-guided dialysis access angioplasty is safe and effective in office settings, a study has found.
The ultrasound procedure allows a physician to directly measure the diameter of treated vessels, which allows the accurate sizing of balloons and stents without the risks of ionising radiation, sedation or iodinated contrast.

Researchers at the Society for Vascular Surgery added that the procedure has technical benefits, including the ability to directly visualise puncture sites, stenoses, thrombus, spasm and extravascular flow in real time.
The study involved 223 procedures in 125 patients. Technical success was achieved in the 219 (98.2%) cases, and complications were seen in 19 (8.5%).
