Shands Cancer Hospital in the US has been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification by the US Green Building Council for its environmentally friendly features.

LEED certification is based on sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

Low-VOC (volatile organic compound) adhesives, paints and carpets were used throughout the 500,000ft² hospital to keep indoor air quality high.

Solar shading, high-performance glass and energy transfer wheels have also been fitted.

The hospital also has an on-site power plant, a 4.3MW facility that supplies all of the hospital’s energy needs, independent of the city grid.

Shands is one of just four hospitals in the US to receive the certification.
