Hormone treatments for prostate cancer are more effective when combined with radiation therapy, according to researchers in the UK.

A study involving 150 patients found that 74% of participants who received the combination treatment were alive after seven years, compared to 66% who only received androgen deprivation therapy, a treatment to lower the levels of hormones that promote cancer growth.

Based on the evidence, researchers say this could prevent 43% of deaths caused by localised but high-risk or locally advanced prostate cancer.
