Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, US, has opened its new $340 million facility, bringing technologically advanced medical care to children in the region.

The new 255-bed hospital can care for more than 130,000 sick and injured children each year.

Patients will begin to be transferred from the existing hospital to the new facility from September.

The hospital features private rooms with sleeping space for two parents, a 60-bed neonatal intensive care unit, a 20-bed paediatric intensive care unit and a 60-bed emergency department to handle major trauma cases.

A computer-based call system will allow nurses to see when a child requires care and what he or she needs.

Wireless technology will also allow for constant electroencephalogram monitoring of epileptic children, even when they are not in their room.
