The Society of Nuclear Medicine Procedure Guidelines Committee has issued guidance on using breast-specific gamma cameras to carry out breast scintigraphies.

The guidance aims to establish high standards of quality in nuclear medicine imaging studies. It will help clinicians improve their understanding of molecular breast-imaging techniques and choose the appropriate CPT coding for breast-specific gamma imaging to ensure the best clinical results.

The society plans to communicate the guidelines to all nuclear medicine colleagues and to the medical community at large.

Using a combination of breast-specific gamma imaging and mammography is more effective at detecting breast cancer than using either alone.
