European researchers are developing intelligent sensors to monitor patients’ symptoms and alert doctors if medical intervention is needed as part of the CHIRON project.
CHIRON (Cyclic and Person-Centric Health Management: Integrated Approach for Home Mobile and Clinical Environment) is a three-year, pan-European project that is being funded by the ARTEMIS Joint Undertaking.

The project aims to combine advanced technologies and solutions into an integrated framework which will enable effective health management.
During the first two years, the research team will develop advanced ultra low-power signal processing algorithms and circuits embedded within medical sensors to give them decision-making capabilities.
In the third year, the technology will be used to test approximately 400 people (200 in Southampton, UK, and 200 in Rome, Italy) from a high-risk heart disease group.
Researchers say that the major technical challenges are to make the sensors wearable, low-power and work in noisy environments 24 hours a day.
